Pop-up Picnics for Public Ed

This year we would like to make the picnic for public ed a national event. That is, on the same day in September (Sunday, Sept. 17th), we would like people across Canada to host their own Pop Up Picnic for Public Ed. Recognizing that people are busy, that planning a big event can be very time consuming, and that meaningful dialogue with a small group of people can often have a far greater impact, we are inviting people to host Pop Up Picnics in local parks across Canada. People for Public Ed will be hosting a picnic in Winnipeg (Kildonan Park) on this day, but we hope that people in other areas of Manitoba, and across Canada, will host their own #picnicforpubliced.

This can be a group as small as 2-3 people who are dedicating the afternoon of Sunday Sept. 17th to talk about public education. No group is too small--the goal is to get together and get talking about public education. Below, find information about signing up and sharing your information on social media. We have also included a picnic toolkit that includes possible activities and discussion topics.

Hosting a pop-up picnic in your area?

  1. Sign-up below to indicate your plans to host a picnic on Sunday, September 17th. We will use this sign-up list to share materials with hosts, and also to create a map that outlines where all of the picnics occurred.

  2. Choose a comfortable place to host your picnic. While some people may want to host their picnics in the backyard, we encourage people to head to their local parks so that your conversations about public ed can occur in a public setting.

  3. Invite friends, family, neighbours, and community members.

  4. Share your experience on social media using the hashtag: #picnicforpubliced2023

  5. If you are comfortable, contact your local media outlet to let them know that you are participating in Pop Up Picnics For Public Ed.
